F.A.Q. Frequently asked questions before buying a Dodge

What is Dodge's philosophy?

Within the former Chrysler Group, Dodge's position was roughly equivalent to that of Pontiac at General Motors; it was a less popular brand than Plymouth, but more accessible than Chrysler, with a sporty image associated with certain models. This dynamic dimension still characterises the brand today.

When was the Dodge brand created?

Having started out as a supplier of spare parts, the Dodge brothers expanded their business in 1914, becoming a fully-fledged manufacturer. Producing both cars and lorries, Dodge was acquired by Chrysler in 1928.

Which Dodge is currently the most powerful?

Launched in 2024, the Charger Daytona, with 100% electric propulsion, is the most powerful model in the current range and also in Dodge's history; its two electric motors give it up to 679 hp.

What should you check before buying a Dodge?

Although extremely reliable in most cases, older Dodge models can suffer from two issues: corrosion and poor maintenance. It is therefore advisable to check certain points before purchasing.

  • Vehicle history: check that the service log has been duly completed and that all work has been carried out by competent workshops specialising in American cars. Ideally, you should have a documented history dating back to when the car left the factory. Be wary of cars imported from the United States, as they have often been poorly maintained. Avoid converted or modified cars and opt for models that are strictly in line with the original.
  • General condition and specific inspections: a thorough inspection by a specialist may be necessary. For models prior to 1980, the first point of concern is possible corrosion of the bodywork and certain structural elements.
  • Maintenance and repair costs: in most cases, routine maintenance is not expensive for these cars, which are mechanically simple with the exception of the contemporary Charger and Challenger. A complete mechanical overhaul can be costly, but this is rare given the mechanical robustness of most models.
  • Reliability and risk factors: There are no particular warning signs for most older Dodge models. However, as with any model from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, it is important to check the condition of the cooling system and the electrical system (especially for cars with optional equipment).

By taking all these precautions, you will protect yourself against any disappointments that may arise from a hasty purchase decision.

Which are the most iconic Dodge models?

In 1966, Dodge launched the Charger, a model designed to rival the Ford Mustang and now considered a classic American car. The eighth generation of the model, launched in 2024, abandoned the V8 engines that made its reputation in favour of a 6-cylinder engine. It is also available in an electric version. Much later, in 1992, Dodge launched the Viper, a legendary sports car powered by a V10 engine – a feature it has retained throughout its five generations.

How much does a vintage Dodge cost?

Having suffered from erratic distribution on the European market, the most common Dodge models on this side of the Atlantic are sports models such as the Charger and Challenger. Highly sought-after, second-generation Charger R/Ts (1968-1970) can fetch up to €85,000. Less expensive, V8-powered Challengers are available from €28,000 according to the LVA rating.

Who owns Dodge today?

In 2014, the Chrysler Group, including the Dodge brand, was acquired by Fiat Auto to form FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles). Seven years later, FCA merged with PSA Peugeot Citroën to create the Stellantis Group, of which Dodge is still a part at the time of writing.
