History
The Lotus Elan +2 was never officially produced as a convertible by Lotus, which sold it exclusively as a coupé. Some owners or dealers (such as the renowned Christopher Neil) had these models converted into bespoke convertibles to meet the demand from customers who wanted to enjoy the 126 hp ‘Big Valve’ engine in the open air. This version represented the pinnacle of the range at the time, combining the enhanced performance of the upgraded cylinder head with a luxurious interior finish in wood and vinyl. Today, these rare conversions are collector’s items offering a unique blend of the +2’s spaciousness and the ‘open-top’ driving pleasure typical of the original small Elan. It is a car that embodies Lotus’s transition into the prestige GT market prior to the arrival of the Elite and the Eclat.
This example was delivered new in 1973. It arrived in France in 2009. The current owner purchased it in 2020.

This Elan is in very good overall condition.
The bodywork is in very good condition and free from rust. The red paintwork is smooth and has a lovely sheen. The alloy wheels are well preserved. The headlight lenses show no particular defects. The soft top is in good condition.
Inside the cabin, the beige seats are in good condition. The dashboard shows no defects. The wood trim is well preserved. The black leather steering wheel is in excellent condition. The instruments are in working order.
The 4-cylinder ‘Twin Cam’ engine starts smoothly and revs well. The clutch is in good condition. Gear changes are precise and smooth. The MOT will be renewed once the necessary work has been carried out. The road holding is excellent.
