Based on the Austin Seven, Colin Chapman’s first design dates back to 1948, but it wasn’t until 1957 that the Seven—a legendary and irreplaceable sports car—made its debut. In fact, after production ceased, Caterham, then a dealer for the brand, purchased the rights to continue manufacturing it (the model is still available today).

After having been owned successively by General Motors, Romano Artioli (the former owner of Bugatti), and then the Malaysian automaker Proton, Lotus was acquired in 2017 by the Chinese group Geely—which also owns Volvo—and the Malaysian company Etika Automotive.

The Lotus lineup currently includes three models: the Emira sports car (the brand’s only internal combustion engine vehicle), the Emeya sedan, and the Eletre SUV—the latter two of which are available exclusively with electric powertrains.

In 1952, Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman (whose initials appear in the brand’s logo) officially founded Lotus, reportedly taking the nickname “Lotus Flower”—which he had given to his fiancée, Hazel—as the company’s name. From the very beginning, he created sports and racing models inspired by his company’s founding principle: “Light is right”—which could be translated as “Weight is the enemy”—before founding one of the most innovative and successful teams in the history of Formula 1.
