The Ferrari 250 GTE (standing for Gran Turismo Evoluzione) was launched in the late 1950s: designed by Pininfarina and then bodied and assembled by Scaglietti. The first prototypes rolled off the production line in Modena in 1959, and production ceased in 1963. The model became the first Ferrari to be mass-produced, with around 950 units produced at a rate of six per day. By way of comparison, Ferrari had produced around 700 road cars since 1947.
The public was introduced to the new Ferrari in 1960 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and it was this particular car – chassis no. 1287 GT, the first prototype of this new model – that served as the race director’s car. It was also Enzo Ferrari’s personal car, which he used on a daily basis.
In 1963, wanting more power, Mr Ferrari decided to replace the 3-litre Colombo V12 with a 400 Superamerica V12 producing 340 chevaux from a 4-litre engine.
The following year, the car was sold to a Frenchman. That same year, following some issues, the engine was replaced again directly at the factory in Modena, once more with a 4-litre Superamerica engine.
In 1971, the car was sold to its third owner, also French. Unfortunately, following a collision with a train at a level crossing, this 250 GTE was severely damaged.
In 1999, the car was purchased by its current owner, who entrusted it to Jean-Louis Préhoubert – recognised as one of the brand’s leading specialists – for a complete restoration.
In 2004, Christian Huet carried out an expert assessment of the car and verified the provenance and authenticity of the parts used in the restoration. He came to the conclusion that all the parts were genuine and came from various Ferrari models.
Thus, after a dozen years of restoration, the current owner took possession of the car. The car still features the fantastic original engine No. 1287-66 SA, which was fitted in 1964. The original Ferrari 1287 GT chassis plate has been re-welded onto the chassis. The gearbox comes from a Ferrari 330 GT 2+2, the successor to the 250 GTE. The rear axle, however, is indeed that of a 250 GTE.
Aesthetically, the car has been repainted to the highest standards by the coachbuilder Le Coq, and the interior has been completely refitted in red Cartier leather.
Since its restoration, the car has been driven very little. The current owner takes great care of it and only takes it out for drives along country roads. In 2023, the clutch was adjusted, the oil was changed and the filters were replaced. The car had another oil change in June 2024.
This magnificent Ferrari 250 GTE has an incredible history, unique mechanical specifications and is presented to you today in absolutely exceptional condition. Its road handling is extremely sound, and the driving experience is far more dynamic than that offered by a ‘traditional’ 250 GTE.
