The late 1950s saw the birth of the Ferrari 250 GTE (Gran Turismo Evoluzione), designed by Pininfarina and then bodied and assembled by Scaglietti. The first prototypes left the Modena factory in 1959 and production ceased in 1963. The model became the first mass-produced Ferrari, with around 950 examples produced at a rate of 6 per day. By way of comparison, Ferrari had produced around 700 road cars since 1947.

The public became acquainted with the new Ferrari in 1960 during the Le Mans 24 Hours, and it was this car, chassis no. 1287 GT, the first prototype of the new model, that served as the race director's car. It was also the personal vehicle of Enzo Ferrari, who used it on a daily basis.

In 1963, wanting more power, Mr Ferrari decided to replace the 3-litre V12 Colombo with a V12 400 Superamerica developing 340 bhp for 4 litres of displacement.

The following year, the car was sold to a Frenchman. That same year, following problems, the engine was changed again directly at the Modena factory, again to a 4-litre Superamerica.

In 1971, the car was sold to its third owner, also a Frenchman. Unfortunately, the 250 GTE was badly damaged in a collision with a train on a level crossing.

In 1999, the car was bought by its current owner, who entrusted it to Jean-Louis Préhoubert, recognised as one of the best specialists in the marque, for a complete restoration.

In 2004, Christian Huet examined the car and confirmed the provenance and authenticity of the parts used in the restoration. He came to one conclusion: all the parts were genuine and came from several Ferrari models.

So, after a dozen years of restoration, the current owner got the car back. The fantastic period engine, no. 1287-66 SA, was installed in 1964. The authentic Ferrari 1287 GT chassis plate has been re-welded onto the chassis. The gearbox comes from a Ferrari 330 GT 2+2, successor to the 250 GTE. The axle, on the other hand, is that of a 250 GTE.
Aesthetically, the car has been professionally repainted by coachbuilder Le Coq, and the cabin has been entirely refurbished in Cartier red leather.

Since the restoration, the car has been driven very little. The current owner takes great care of it and only takes it out for drives on country roads. In 2023, the clutch was adjusted, the oil changed and the filters replaced. The car was drained again in June 2024.

This magnificent Ferrari 250 GTE has an incredible history, a unique engine and is presented to you today in truly exceptional condition. Its road handling is extremely sound, and the driving experience and much more dynamic than that offered by a "traditional" 250 GTE.
