F.A.Q. Frequently asked questions before buying a Volvo
Who owns Volvo?
In 1999, Volvo Cars was spun off from the rest of the company (which included truck manufacturing, marine engines, and construction materials) and came under Ford’s control. Ford sold Volvo to the Chinese group Geely in 2010.
What are Volvo's origins?
Volvo, which means "I roll" in Latin, was founded in 1927 by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustav Larson to manufacture passenger cars, trucks, and buses. Launched with the support of the SKF bearing company, Volvo became an independent company in 1935.
Which Volvo models are the most popular among collectors?
Vintage car enthusiasts rave about the Amazon, which debuted in 1956 and played a significant role in establishing the brand’s reputation. The 1800 ES station wagon is also highly sought after due to its elegance and rarity. Closer to our time, the legendary 240 series, particularly in its station wagon version, is undoubtedly the most obvious embodiment of the Volvo spirit. Meanwhile, many youngtimer collectors appreciate the 850, particularly in its R version, which is highly sought after as a station wagon.
How much does a classic Volvo cost?
Most Volvos are relatively affordable on the collector’s market. According to LVA’s price guide, an 1800 ES station wagon can be purchased for around 25,000 euros. The baroque 262 C coupe costs no more than 9,500 euros in excellent condition, while 10,000 euros will suffice to purchase an 850 R station wagon.
How did Volvo build its reputation?
From the very beginning, Volvo’s founders built the brand’s identity around safety. This goes hand in hand with the sturdiness of the vehicle bodies and the ability to drive safely even in the harshest weather conditions. In this regard, several innovations have left their mark on Volvo’s history, including: • the three-point seatbelt in 1959, • the first rear-facing child seat in 1967, • the first booster seat integrated into the rear seat in 1990, • the SIPS (Side Impact Protection System) for side-impact protection in 1991.
What should you check before buying a classic Volvo?
While vintage Volvos are renowned for their reliability in the vast majority of cases, they do have two main enemies: corrosion and inadequate maintenance—a common issue with brands known for their durability. It is therefore important to check certain points before making a purchase.
- Vehicle history: Verify that the maintenance log has been properly completed and that all repairs were performed by qualified workshops or within the manufacturer’s network. Ideally, you should have a documented history dating back to when the car left the factory.
- Overall condition and specific inspections: A thorough inspection by a specialist may be necessary. For models manufactured before 1980, the primary concern is potential corrosion of the bodywork and certain structural components.
- Maintenance and repair costs: In most cases, routine maintenance is not expensive for these cars. A complete mechanical overhaul can, however, be costly, though such a scenario is rare given the mechanical robustness of most models. Be cautious, however, with newer models that are more technically complex (such as the 850 R), as they may incur very high repair costs if maintenance has been neglected by previous owners.
- Reliability and Potential Issues: There are no specific red flags for most older Volvos, with the exception of models equipped with Volkswagen-sourced diesel engines, which are somewhat fragile in certain respects and require special attention. Also ensure the cooling system is in good condition, particularly on the 260, 760, and 780 models with PRV V6 engines.
By following all these precautions, you’ll protect yourself from potential disappointments that could arise from a hasty purchase decision.
