Land Rover: the origins of an off-road icon
Founded in 1948 by the Rover Company, Land Rover was born of the idea of creating a robust, versatile vehicle capable of conquering all types of terrain. Inspired by the American Jeeps of the Second World War, Maurice Wilks, Rover's chief engineer, designed the first prototype using parts from military aircraft and a simple but effective chassis. The result was the Land Rover Series I, an all-terrain utility vehicle that immediately stood out for its ability to cope with difficult conditions, its durability and its mechanical simplicity. Range Rover Classic : un classique intemporel
Le Range Rover fait partie d’une caste particulière, dont les membres sont rares et conservent encore aujourd’hui un prestige qui les a fait passer du statut d’utilitaire amélioré à celui d’icône de plus en plus luxueuse. Si Land Rover avait dans l’idée, dès sa conception, d’offrir un 4×4 plus statutaire et plus confortable que ses congénères d’alors, il n’est pas sûr que ceux qui le conçurent imaginaient à l’époque le Range d’aujourd’hui, bardé de cuir, de boiseries et de délicates attentions, tout en conservant ses qualités en tout-terrain. Depuis 50 ans, le Range Rover fait partie du paysage, évoluant au gré des années. Mais nul doute que pour les amateurs, c’est le Range dit “Classic” qui garde l’aura la plus forte.

Les Rover des années 90 et 2000 ont une saveur particulière a posteriori : puisque l’on connaît l’issue de l’aventure, elles en prennent un côté attachant qu’elles n’avaient pas toujours à l’époque. La Metro fait partie de ces Rover mal-aimées et parfois dépassées qui gardenr un charme fou, surtout dans leurs dérivés sportifs (lire aussi : MG Metro Turbo pour la série, et 6R4 pour le rallye), cabriolet (lire aussi : Série 100 Cabriolet), voire carrément exclusifs (lire aussi : Frazer Tickford Metro). Jaguar XE SV Project 8 : la féline XE prend du muscle
Si Jaguar a souvent produit des pures sportives, il s’agissait le plus souvent de coupés, roadsters et autres barquettes, rarement d’une berline. Certes, la Mark 2 ou la première génération de XJ (lire aussi : Jaguar XJ) avaient suffisamment de watts pour la haute vitesse sur le grand ruban noir, tandis que les XJ40 eurent droit à leurs dérivés « Jaguarsport » en collaboration avec TWR (lire aussi : Jaguarsport XJR XJ40), sans parler de dérivés plus ou moins officiels, comme la Chasseur Stealth (lire aussi : Chasseur Stealth 340 Biturbo). Certes enfin, les plus récentes XJ eurent droit à leur version XJR depuis la X305 (puis X308, lire aussi : Jaguar XJR X305/X308). Aucune n’avait pourtant vocation à se transformer en pistarde.
